On the ballot

This person would represent one of Ventura's seven City Council districts: city ordinances, the budget, and land use for this Ventura County city of about 110,763 residents (the county seat). The Council appoints a City Manager (Bill Ayub, a former Ventura County Sheriff, as of this cycle) to run day-to-day operations. A 4-year term, staggered so three or four seats are up every two years -- Districts 1, 4, 5, and 6 are up this cycle; Districts 2, 3, and 7 aren't up again until 2028. Ventura has no separately, directly elected Mayor -- the Council selects one of its own members each December to hold the title for a two-year term and preside over meetings. Dr. Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios (District 4, on this year's ballot for re-election) currently holds it, selected by her colleagues in December 2024, with Doug Halter (District 2) as Deputy Mayor. Ventura moved from at-large elections to seven single-member districts in 2018 after a threatened California Voting Rights Act challenge.

Incumbent Liz Campos, a 32-year Westside resident and neighborhood advocate, faces her first challenger: Crawford Coates, a marketing executive and Ventura Water Commissioner running on infrastructure, parks, and support for local businesses.

Liz Campos

The incumbent. Her ballot designation reads "City of Ventura Councilmember." Her own candidate statement says she has lived in Ventura for 32 years with a long record of neighborhood advocacy on Ventura Avenue and in the downtown area, and that she regularly attends and speaks at Ventura Government Center meetings on constitutional-rights issues.

Strengths

Incumbency and three decades of on-the-ground neighborhood presence in the district she represents.

Trade-offs

Her statement is largely about civic presence and availability rather than a specific second-term policy platform.

Crawford Coates

His ballot designation reads "Marketing Executive/Father." His candidate statement adds that he works at a small public-safety technology company, serves on the Ventura Water Commission, and is raising two children in local public schools; his stated priorities are road and infrastructure repair, parks and community-program funding, clean water and air, traffic safety, and support for Westside businesses.

Strengths

A sitting seat on the city's own Water Commission -- direct exposure to one of the district's stated priorities -- plus a locally rooted family and business tie to the Westside.

A first-time candidate with no prior elected experience, running against an incumbent.

Keep in mind

"Water Commissioner" is an appointed city-commission role, not an elected office -- relevant experience, but not the same credential as Campos's council incumbency.
