This person is one of five members on the Ventura County Board of Education, which sets policy for the Ventura County Office of Education -- the office that runs county-wide special-education and alternative-education programs, provides credentialing and professional learning for local teachers, and hears interdistrict-transfer and expulsion appeals from the county's local school districts. A 4-year term.

Ventura County Board of Education's Area 2 seat is contested this November: two-term incumbent Mike Teasdale, the board's vice president, faces Debra McIntyre-Sciarrino, a Los Angeles Unified high school principal making her first bid for county office. Area 2 covers the Conejo Valley -- Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, the Ventura County portion of Westlake Village, Oak Park, and part of Camarillo. Whoever wins takes a 4-year term on a board now overseeing a forensic audit of its own superintendent's office.

The winner joins a 5-member board that sets policy for the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE): the agency that runs the county's own special-education and alternative-education programs, provides teacher credentialing and professional-learning services to local districts, and hears interdistrict-transfer and expulsion appeals those districts can't resolve on their own. VCOE has about 700 employees and a roughly $285 million annual budget. The board doesn't run schools directly -- it oversees the elected county superintendent's office, which does.

This board is not business as usual right now: after County Superintendent Cesar Morales admitted in May to an unauthorized bonus and unauthorized staff benefits, the board committed roughly $350,000 -- more than double its own annual budget -- to a forensic audit and stepped-up financial oversight of his office. Teasdale co-chairs that oversight committee. The choice in Area 2 is less about a philosophical direction for VCOE than about who continues, or who would instead bring fresh eyes to, that oversight work.

Mike Teasdale

Mike Teasdale is the incumbent Area 2 trustee and the board's vice president, first elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022. He co-chairs the board's newly formed financial-oversight committee, convened after the elected county superintendent admitted to unauthorized pay and staff benefits this year, and says his priorities are student safety, academic growth, and career readiness. His ballot designation is 'Incumbent.'

Debra McIntyre-Sciarrino is a Los Angeles Unified School District administrator -- principal of Chatsworth Charter High School -- making her first run for county office, with a ballot designation of 'Teacher Education Administrator.' She has not published a campaign platform, website, or public statement about her priorities for this race that this pass could find. She has no campaign committee registered with the state, per Secretary of State filer records checked August 31, 2026.
