Maxine Waters

Maxine Waters has served in Congress since 1991. Before that they spent 14 years in the California Assembly, rising to Democratic Caucus chair. They became the first woman and first African American to chair the House Financial Services Committee. In the Assembly they pushed the state to sell off pension holdings tied to apartheid-era South Africa.

Waters has represented this district since 1991 and says they will keep fighting for their constituents. In August 2026 a court blocked a Trump attempt to cut funding for homeless services in Los Angeles. Waters's office had pushed that fight. The ruling kept support in place for more than 11,000 people.

Waters's recent bills include the Food for Palestinian Children and Families in Gaza Act. With Senator Cory Booker Waters also wrote the Fair Competition Act, to protect small businesses from unfair pricing. Waters promises to keep opposing what they call attacks on sanctuary cities.
