## On the ballot

- **Ami Bera** — United States Congressman · Democratic
- **Robb Tucker** — County Supervisor/Businessman · Republican

Representative Ami Bera led the June 2 primary with 34.3% and Republican Robb Tucker took 29.9%. One thing to know before you read further: Bera currently represents District 6. Under Prop 50 the congressional lines were redrawn, and he is running here in the renumbered District 3 — so he is a sitting member of Congress, but not currently this district's member. The district covers part of Sacramento County.

The winner holds one of 435 seats in the U.S. House for a two-year term. A member introduces bills, sits on committees that shape federal legislation, votes on the federal budget and on war powers, and handles casework between constituents and federal agencies. Seniority governs committee standing, and a member who changes districts keeps their seniority even though the constituents change.

Redistricting is the frame for this contest. Bera's thirteen years of service and committee seniority travel with him, but the district he is asking to represent is not the one that elected him. He also led the primary with only 34.3%, well short of a majority. Weigh accumulated federal experience against the fact that this is, for these voters, a new representative asking for a first term.

## Ami Bera

Ami Bera is a physician who earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from UC Irvine. He practiced medicine in the Sacramento region for two decades, including as chief medical officer for Sacramento County, before his 2013 election to Congress (official site). He now serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific. He also sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and co-chairs the Congressional Taiwan Caucus (official site). Redistricting under Prop 50 moved him from the 6th District, which he still represents, into the renumbered 3rd District, where he is now running (campaign site).

Bera's campaign says "as a doctor, Ami Bera has always put service first, and he believes that Congress should be a place for service" (campaign site). In September 2026 he voted against H.R. 5334. He said he has "a long history of standing with the Ukrainian people" against the Russian invasion (official site).

His campaign lists nine priorities: energy and the environment, Medicare and Social Security, national security, defending women's rights, health care, veterans, jobs and the economy, wildfire prevention and forest resilience, and protecting Lake Tahoe (campaign site).

**Strengths:** Thirteen years in Congress, seats on the Foreign Affairs and Intelligence committees, and Asia-policy leadership roles a first-term member could not match.

**Trade-offs:** He is asking District 3 voters to elect him for the first time, since redistricting moved him out of the seat he has represented since 2013.

**Keep in mind:** He led the June primary with just over a third of the vote in a multi-candidate field, in a district he does not currently represent.

## Robb Tucker

Robb Tucker holds a business degree from Pepperdine University and a graduate degree from Wheaton College. He ran Forest Springs Mobilehome Community, a family business his parents helped start in the early 1970s, until he sold it in 2020 (campaign site). He was elected to the Nevada County Board of Supervisors in 2024, and also holds an FAA commercial pilot's license (campaign site).

Tucker says that "after a successful career running our family business, I turned my attention to public service." He is "running for Congress to take that solutions-oriented leadership to Washington, D.C." (campaign site). His campaign site says that as a supervisor "he has been a strong voice for public safety, protecting small businesses, and defending local quality of life." It does not detail specific votes or actions, and no independent news coverage of his supervisor tenure was found in this review.

He promises to protect public safety, support small businesses and job creation, and preserve quality of life in the district. He says he would do this through "balanced growth, development, and agricultural preservation" (campaign site).

**Strengths:** A current elected county supervisor seat, a long career running a family business, and a professional pilot's license.

**Trade-offs:** No record in the Legislature or Congress, and no independent coverage found of his supervisor tenure to check against his own account.

**Keep in mind:** What is documented here is mostly his own account of himself. That is typical for a first-time congressional challenger, not a mark against him alone.
