This person would hold your district's seat on Sunnyvale's 7-member City Council: city ordinances, the budget, and land use in this Santa Clara County city of about 156,000, alongside a separately elected, citywide Mayor (Larry Klein, elected 2020 and reelected 2024, not on this ballot) and five other district Councilmembers. A 4-year term. Six of the seven seats are elected from individual districts on staggered terms -- Districts 1, 3, and 5 are up this cycle; Districts 2, 4, and 6 (last elected 2024) aren't.

Only one candidate is running for this seat. Incumbent Linda Sell, appointed to the District 1 seat in 2022, appears unopposed for her first full elected term — so this contest looks settled and your vote here is unlikely to change the outcome.

Sunnyvale elects six of its seven City Council seats by district, each to a 4-year term, on a staggered schedule: District 1's seat was last on the ballot in 2022 and is up again this cycle alongside Districts 3 and 5. A citywide-elected Mayor (Larry Klein, not on this ballot) and five other district Councilmembers round out the council; day-to-day operations run through an appointed city manager.

With no opponent, the useful question is not who to choose but what the officeholder has done and how she got there. Sell was the only candidate to file nomination papers for this seat in 2022, and the City Council voted 6-1 to appoint her rather than spend roughly $20,000 holding an election nobody was contesting — a choice Sunnyvale has made for other unopposed seats before.

Linda Sell

Linda Sell has represented District 1 since being appointed in August 2022 and seated in January 2023 — the city's first female Asian American Councilmember. Her stated priorities include environmental sustainability, school resources, and community engagement, and she has described wanting a city that is more affordable, walkable, bikeable, and transit-oriented. No independent news coverage of her council record or 2026 campaign beyond her 2022 appointment was found in this pass.
