This person would hold one of Redwood City's seven district-elected City Council seats: city ordinances, the budget, and land use for San Mateo County's county seat, a city of about 84,300 residents (2020 census), under a council-manager government with an appointed City Manager. A 4-year term. The council -- not voters directly -- chooses one of its own members to serve as Mayor in a seniority-based rotation; Redwood City moved to by-district council elections in a 2022 redistricting.

Only one candidate qualified for Redwood City's District 6 council seat: incumbent Diane Howard. This contest is settled and your vote here does not change the outcome.

The seat carries a 4-year term on Redwood City's 7-member City Council, San Mateo County's county seat, under a council-manager government with an appointed City Manager. The council -- not voters directly -- chooses one of its own to serve as Mayor in a seniority-based rotation. Redwood City moved to by-district council elections in a 2022 redistricting.

With no opponent, the useful question is not who to choose but what more than three decades in office looks like, and what's changed since the last time voters had a real choice here.

Diane Howard

First elected to the council in 1994 and has served continuously since, except for a gap from 2009 to 2013 -- one of the longest tenures in Redwood City government. She represented District 5 before the 2022 redistricting moved her into District 6, and has twice been chosen by her council colleagues to serve as the rotation Mayor, in 1997 and again in 2019. Her filed ballot designation, 'City Councilmember / Nurse,' points to a nursing career, but neither her own campaign site nor any other source reached this pass elaborates on that professional background -- a real gap, not filled with guesswork. Her campaign frames her record around 'listening, collaboration, and thoughtful decision making,' with stated priorities of neighborhood safety, reliable infrastructure, supporting local business, improving traffic, and fiscal responsibility.
