This person would hold one of Redwood City's seven district-elected City Council seats: city ordinances, the budget, and land use for San Mateo County's county seat, a city of about 84,300 residents (2020 census), under a council-manager government with an appointed City Manager. A 4-year term. The council -- not voters directly -- chooses one of its own members to serve as Mayor in a seniority-based rotation; Redwood City moved to by-district council elections in a 2022 redistricting.

Only one candidate qualified for Redwood City's District 5 council seat: incumbent Vice Mayor Kaia Eakin. This contest is settled and your vote here does not change the outcome.

The seat carries a 4-year term on Redwood City's 7-member City Council, San Mateo County's county seat, under a council-manager government with an appointed City Manager. The council -- not voters directly -- chooses one of its own to serve as Mayor in a seniority-based rotation. Redwood City moved to by-district council elections in a 2022 redistricting.

With no opponent, the useful question is not who to choose but what the officeholder has done in her first term and what happens next -- notably, that this seat is on track to become the Mayor's seat.

Kaia Eakin

First elected in 2022 and now the council's sitting Vice Mayor; per the council's seniority-based rotation, she is next in line to become Mayor when Mayor Elmer Martinez Saballos's term expires in December 2026 -- a procedural succession, not something decided by this contest. A lifelong Bay Area resident born in Redwood City and raised on the Peninsula, per her own campaign site: a Woodside High School graduate with a B.A. in English Literature from the College of Notre Dame in Belmont and a J.D. from UC Davis. Her platform emphasizes recreational funding, climate resiliency, road safety, and affordable housing, framed around community engagement and policy that reflects residents' needs.
