Mayor of Escondido

This person presides over City Council meetings and represents Escondido publicly. They vote as one of five members on the budget and city laws. An appointed city manager runs day-to-day government. Escondido's mayor is the only council member elected citywide. The others are elected by district. The term is four years.

Incumbent Mayor Dane White faces one challenger. He is Elias Velazquez. Whoever gets the most votes on November 3 wins. There is no runoff.

The choice comes down to two people. Both work closely with Escondido's homeless population, from very different vantage points. White is seeking a second term. He points to clearing a large homeless encampment known as "The Jungle" in 2024. He calls that his signature first-term accomplishment. He campaigns on continuing that approach, alongside public safety, affordability, small-business support, and road repair. Velazquez works daily with homeless and at-risk residents through a local nonprofit. He argues for a different approach, centered on pursuing more state and federal funding. He also wants a sharper focus on traffic safety. And he wants a sharper focus on what he calls the council's mishandling of the city's ICE contract.

Dane White

Dane White is the incumbent Mayor. He is a fifth-generation Escondido resident. He owns WhiteWerks Flooring. He is running for a second term. He runs on public safety, affordability, small-business support, and road repair. His signature first-term action was clearing a homeless encampment called "The Jungle" in 2024.

Elias Velazquez

Elias Velazquez is a lifelong Escondido resident. He works for the Brother Benno Foundation, a local nonprofit. He is a first-time candidate. He wants more funding for homelessness and support for law enforcement. He has criticized the city's ICE contract. He says "our council completely fumbled this issue."
