On the ballot

This person presides over City Council meetings and represents Escondido publicly, but votes as one of five members on the budget and city ordinances -- day-to-day city government runs through an appointed city manager. Escondido's mayor is the only member of the council elected citywide rather than by district. A 4-year term.

Incumbent Mayor Dane White faces challenger Elias Velazquez for Escondido Mayor. Whichever candidate gets the most votes on November 3 wins outright; there's no runoff.

Escondido's mayor presides over City Council meetings and represents the city publicly, but votes as one of five members on the budget and city ordinances -- the same as any other councilmember. Day-to-day city government runs through an appointed city manager, not the mayor's office. It's the only council seat elected citywide rather than by district. A 4-year term.

The choice comes down to two people who both work closely with Escondido's homeless population, from very different vantage points. White, seeking a second term, points to clearing a large homeless encampment known as "The Jungle" in 2024 as his signature first-term accomplishment and campaigns on continuing that approach alongside public safety, affordability, small-business support, and road repair. Velazquez works daily with homeless and at-risk residents through a local nonprofit and argues for a different approach centered on pursuing more state and federal funding, plus a sharper focus on traffic safety and what he calls the council's mishandling of the city's ICE contract.

Dane White

The incumbent, a fifth-generation Escondido resident and owner of WhiteWerks Flooring LLC, first elected mayor in 2022 after serving on the Escondido Union High School District board. He has spoken publicly about his own past experience with addiction and homelessness, which he says shapes his approach to the issue. His first-term signature was clearing "The Jungle," a large homeless encampment, in 2024; he's campaigning for a second term on public safety, affordability, small-business support, and road and infrastructure repair.

Strengths

A full first term already in office gives him a concrete, checkable record on his signature issue (the 2024 encampment clearance), plus prior school-board experience.

Trade-offs

A full term in office means his record is the fullest one on this ballot for voters to weigh, including whatever they'd want done differently on homelessness.

Elias Velazquez

A lifelong Escondido resident with a political-science degree from CSU Chico, working as information director and volunteer coordinator for the Brother Benno Foundation, a local nonprofit serving homeless and at-risk residents. A first-time candidate for elected office, he says the city should pursue more state and federal funding for homelessness, take a more balanced approach to it, support law enforcement, and address dangerous intersections. He has also criticized the city's ICE contract, saying "our council completely fumbled this issue."

Strengths

Daily, front-line experience with the same population White's signature policy affected, from the nonprofit-services side rather than the enforcement side.
