Assemblymember Josh Hoover took 50.9% of the June 2 vote and Democrat Amy L. Slavensky took 47.2% — a 3.7-point gap that makes this one of the closest legislative contests on the November ballot, and a bare majority for a sitting member. The district covers Folsom, Citrus Heights and the eastern Sacramento suburbs.

The winner holds one of 80 Assembly seats for a two-year term, inside a 12-year lifetime cap on service in Sacramento. An Assemblymember authors bills, sits on the policy committees that decide which bills advance, and argues for the district's share of the annual state budget. Which party wins here determines whether this district's representative works inside the majority or the minority, and that materially changes what they can move.

He also has one of the stronger minority-caucus records here. Weigh that against a challenger who came within four points while raising about a third as much.

Josh Hoover

She came within 3.7 points of an incumbent on roughly a third of his money, one of the strongest challenger showings on this ballot.

She goes into the general well outspent and without party money at his scale, and has no record in office to be judged on.
